Ground wire/Ground Rod

Ground wire/Ground Rod Graphic A ground wire connects inside the meter enclosure to the neutral to provide a ground for the secondary neutral and the customers meter. This ground wire usually extends down the edge of the building to below ground level where it attaches to a ground rod. The ground wire and ground rod serve as an easy path for lightning to get into the earth if it should strike the utility line or the customer's electrical service.

In some areas where it is very rocky and difficult to drive ground rods into the ground, other methods of grounding can be used. One alternative is to connect the ground wire to metallic rebar in the concrete of the building floor and foundation.
