Surge Voltages in AC Power Circuits - ANSI/IEEE Standard C62.41

IEEE Standard 587, Guide on Surge Voltages in AC Power Circuits Rated up to 600V

This well-established U.S. standard presents and describes the traditional impulse wave for short branch circuits, at or near the circuit breaker box. Categories A and B for long and short branch circuits are established. Peak voltages that occur are given as a function of various exposure levels. In addition, surge energy (available surge current) is specified. The standard also presents the 100 kilohertz damped cosine wave form called a Ring Wave to simulate oscillatory wave shapes found on branch circuits.
