Transient Symptoms - Electric Motors

Transients can impact motors in a couple of ways. First, if the motor is electronically-controlled, then it is susceptible to spikes. Second, and most common for standard motors, is the effect spikes have on the windings. Each time the stator windings are hit by transients, they must absorb the energy. Depending on how much energy there is, the winding insulation either degrades or fails altogether. When the insulation fails, the motor itself will short out or burn up.
