Connection Integrity

There are probably hundreds of thousands of connections on the distribution system. Each of these connections could be a potential power quality problem. It is vitally important that each of these be made in a tight and correct fashion.

It would be impossible to establish an inspection program to check each connection on the system, therefore the easiest and best way to ensure connection integrity is during construction and routine maintenance. Ensuring that all connections are clean, tight and proper. This can prevent multitudes of future problems.

Loose connections usually show themselves with arcing and hot spots. Arcing can be detected with RF devices designed for this purpose. Line crews will often find arcing or flashed equipment with their AM radio. When driving past a loose connection that is carrying a load, the radio will pickup static or interference.
