Generators - Description

A motor-generator or mg set is simply an ac motor connected to an ac generator. The unit uses electricity to generate electricity. The MG set uses the mechanical power of an AC motor to drive an AC generator. The AC generator supplies the electricity to power the equipment. The only connection to the outside world is the shaft between the motor and generator. Therefore, any transient or noise condition present on the input power is not transferred to the load. Voltage is regulated by the inertia of the rotating shaft. This inertia provides small amounts of ridethrough protection. It can be increased with the addition of a flywheel to the system. Since the generator being used is sized to match the running load of the system, voltage sags may occur with sudden load changes or during start-up for large loads.
