Alternative energy is energy sources other than fossil fuels, including renewable sources and nuclear energy. However, nuclear energy is not classified as a renewable energy source becaused it is mined from uranium and thorium elements which cannot be replenished.
Renewable energy is produced from sources that do NOT deplete the resource and can be replenshied in a human’s lifetime. Alternative energy is more favorable because they do not emit greenhouse gases or air pollutants, so they are a clean source of energy.
Alternative energy comes from resources like the sun (solar); the earth (geothermal); the wind (wind power); wood, agricultural crops, plants and animal waste (biomass); water (hydropower); landfill or methane gasses (biogas); and other sources like tidal and wave power from the ocean, hydrogen fuel, lightening, and nuclear energy.
Most of these resources are both abundant and renewable. By using alternative fuel sources we can conserve our non-renewable fuel sources like natural gas and oil. In this way, we can be more efficient in producing electricity and heat while protecting our environment.
