All-Air Central Reheat Systems

General

This system heats the supply air whenever the cooling load is below the maximum. These systems are energy inefficient unless the reheat is from recovered heat and have the added expense of bringing the heat energy to the supply air or the terminal units. Many energy codes severely restrict the use of reheat (see ASHRAE Standard 90.1).

They are applied where spaces have wide load variations, high latent loads, or where close control of both temperature and humidity is required. The concept can be applied to either constant or VAV systems.

Energy efficiency can often be improved by using varying air volume controls attempt to match space needs first, before the reheat kicks in. Another option is to reset the cold air temperature higher as outdoor temperature falls.
