The service-drop conductors usually extend directly to the side of a house or building and attach to the meter loop. It consists of the weatherhead (to provide weather protection), the service mast or riser (the metal or plastic pipe that protects the conductors), and the meter enclosure.
The meter loop serves as the path for electrical conductors to securely attach to the house or building and the electrical meter. After the electricity goes through the meter, the wires in the meter loop connect to the customer's service entrance. Utility policies related to ownership and maintenance of the meter loop vary across the country. Some utilities provide the meter loop and install it, and some do not.
